3 makes Skype free on all mobiles

by Julie ~ April 23rd, 2009

3 Pay As You Go Store

3 just made Skype on its mobiles completely free: the network’s just announced a new pay as you go SIM card with no monthly subscriptions that’ll make Skype calls for absolutely zilch. The best bit of all: it’ll cost just £2!

T-Mobile might see VoIP integration in to phones as inevitable in future, but 3 is embracing cheap internet calls right now.

Starting next month, you’ll be able to buy a Skype friendly 3 SIM card for just £1.99 that will let you make Skype to Skype calls and IMs for free over 3G, not just Wi-Fi like the Skype iPhone app out at the moment. There’s no subscription, no monthly top ups required, that really is it, and the 3 SIM cardwill work in any unlocked 3G handset from the Summer.

If completely free calls sounds like business suicide, think again: 3 is looking to nab customers from other networks with the offer, and get them spending on other 3 services. We’re sold: the other networks need to start looking over their shoulders. Skype has 433 million users worldwide, so at a price point like this, there’ll be no holding VoIP fans back.

3 UK grinds to a halt

by Julie ~ April 22nd, 2009

3

The 3G mobile phone operator ‘3′ seems to have ground to a halt this afternoon, leaving thousands of people unable to make or receive calls. The outage has been over the last hour or two and is resulting in on-screen error messages such as ‘Call Failed’ or ‘Network Error’.

I phoned 3 earlier on as one of my phones appeared to be dead and was told by 3’s excellent customer services (sarcastic face) that is was probably my phone. I asked if he was sure as I had spoke to two other people with 3 phones having the same problem, and he assured me there was no problem with the network.

17:20 and my 3 phone starts to finally ring, and surprise, surprise it’s 3! The advisor confirms that there is in fact a nationwide outage with 3 which he claims is being rectified as we speak.

Have you been affected by today’s outage? Let us know.

Android 1.5’s widget support gets detailed

by Julie ~ April 22nd, 2009

android-widgets

One of the huge features missing from Android at its initial launch was proper widget extensibility — as far as the official SDK was concerned, what you saw on the home screen when you took your phone out of the box was what you got, no questions asked.

Fortunately, this is a marquis addition in 1.5, and the official Android Developers Blog is detailing exactly how this is all going to go down. In short, it looks like devs have complete control — as it should be — with the ability to infinitely tweak widget update intervals and appearance. As any G1 owner can attest, this action can’t possibly come soon enough.

Nokia 1100 seemingly hackable, making a big comeback

by Julie ~ April 22nd, 2009

nokia1100

Apparently some shady hackers and cyber-criminals have recently started offering upwards of $30,000 for the Nokia 1100 which were manufactured at a specific plant in Bochum, Germany. You may ask yourself, “why?” Well, beyond the obvious answer (style), certain makes of the super-popular handset can apparently be reprogrammed to use someone else’s phone number, allowing them to receive text messaged bank passwords (common in parts of Europe), thus making it much, much easier to steal people’s money.

The software flaw has been pointed out by Ultrascan Advance Global Investigations, who were contacted by police who had noted the curiously high offering prices on the old-timey candybar. Nokia has contended that it has not identified any software problems which would allow such use, so it’s hard to say what exactly is going on at this point, but we’ll let you know if we hear anything concrete.

T-Mobile loses Starbucks contract

by Julie ~ April 21st, 2009

starbucksBT will take over as Wi-Fi operator at Starbucks coffee shops in the UK and Ireland, with T-Mobile losing out on revenue from more than 650 hotspots.

Announcing the deal today, BT said it will begin to install service in some stores this week, with rollout scheduled to be completed by the end of summer. The deal is for five years.

T-Mobile has operated Starbucks hotspots for the last 6 years on a subscription or pay as you go basis.

A spokesman for the mobile firm told The Register it now intends to focus on improving its mobile broadband network. Wi-Fi will remain as a “complementary” service in high demand areas such as airports.

BT’s Starbucks hotspots will form part of its Openzone network. BT’s home broadband packages include bundled Openzone minutes.

An existing public Wi-Fi deal with O2 means iPhone users will also get access at Starbucks, at faster speeds than offered by 3G. From summer this year, O2 dongle subscribers will also get bundled Openzone access.

While mobile operator rivals have seen rapid growth in mobile data use from by smartphone and dongle owners, BT has sought to expand its Wi-Fi coverage.

Following a setback last year, when it failed to agree commercial terms to continue a deal with The Cloud, it controversially enabled all its business broadbands routers as Openzone hotspots via a software update. Businesses who did not want their bandwidth to form part of the network were required to opt out.
